Reflection Pool Press Release

Reflection Pool

Beginning in early November, the public will have the chance to get outdoors and experience a new work by two Wake Forest University artists within the Reynolda walking trails. Emma Hein and Ceci Kammire’s work titled Reflection Pool consists of an assortment of rocks from the North Carolina region, which the artists collected by hand and formed into a meditative labyrinth. Located on the site of the Reynolds family’s former outdoor pool, this artwork creates a new space for contemplation within the existing beautiful landscape. Complementing the labyrinth design are small mirrors scattered throughout the surrounding trees, displacing light and changing scenery as one circles the rock-lined path. In the center of the labyrinth, viewers may be prompted into reflection reading the poetry of the well-known Wake Forest graduate, A.R. Ammons. The labyrinth’s design encourages viewers to slowly walk the work, admiring its shape from above, and reflecting on their position within the surrounding environment. With the effects of the COVID pandemic keeping people indoors for unhealthy amounts of time, the artists were inspired to create a work where the public could practice mindfulness in their natural surroundings.
